Begging for food is a common behavior problem in dogs, and it can be annoying and unhealthy for both you and your dog. To train your dog to stop begging for food, you need to be consistent and patient, and follow these steps:

  • Don’t feed your dog from the table. This is the most important rule, as giving your dog any food scraps will reinforce the begging behavior. No matter how cute or persistent your dog is, do not give in to their pleas.

  • Don’t interact with your dog when they beg. Ignore your dog completely when they beg for food, and don’t talk to them, touch them, or look at them. Any attention, even negative attention, can be rewarding for your dog and encourage them to keep begging.

  • Keep your dog occupied. Give your dog something else to do when you are eating, such as playing with a chew toy, a food puzzle, or a Kong toy. This will distract your dog from begging and keep them entertained and satisfied.

  • Feed your dog before or after your meal. Make sure your dog has their own food before or after you eat, so they are not hungry when you are eating. You can also feed your dog in a separate room, so they don’t see or smell your food.

  • Teach your dog to go to their place. Train your dog to go to a designated spot, such as their bed or crate, when you are eating. Use a command like “place” or “bed” and reward your dog with praise and treats when they obey. This will teach your dog to stay away from the table and relax in their own space.
